Arsenal full-back Nacho Monreal says the relationship between Mesut Ozil and head coach Unai Emery is just fine after reports emerged that the two had a bust-up before the home game against West Ham, The Evening Standard reports.

Ozil had started our previous three games against Manchester City, Chelsea and respectively – though many felt his performances were under-par in those games.

The German has come under scrutiny for his apparent lack of intensity in his defensive work, something Emery said is non-negotiable for any player.

Emery wants the team to win the ball back quickly and that’s not really Ozil’s game, especially when he’s operating on the wing. It led reports to claim that a bust-up in training was the reason behind the German’s absence at the Emirates, though the club denied that.

Our head coach said Ozil was sick and Monreal concurs, slamming the media for creating a nothing story.

“People have been a bit unfair with him,” the left-back was quoted as saying.

He is a very famous player and obviously, people love talking about him. Recently, it is always bad things. Like last time, he was sick and that’s why he didn’t play.

“People started to invent that he had a problem with the manager. It wasn’t like that. He got a cold, he was sick, that’s it. That’s why he didn’t play.”
