Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal is the latest player to sit down with Soccer AM to discuss his teammates and the Spaniard was asked to name the best player in the current squad.

While the question seems rather straightforward, many players usually refrain from propping one player above the rest of the squad due to a slight fear of splitting a squad’s togetherness.

However, for Monreal, he didn’t hesitate when pressed on who he felt was the leading man in the current squad with the left-back going for Alexandre Lacazette.

Lacazette has been dwarfed by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in terms of goals this campaign, but Monreal feels the Frenchman’s overall play and assists have been pivotal for the team.

The former Lyon man has scored 12 goals in all competitions this season as well as laying on six assists and does look more suited to a lone-forward role than Aubameyang.

“I think the best player at Arsenal at the moment has been Alexandre Lacazette,” Monreal told Soccer AM.

“He’s playing so well, he’s training really well, he’s scoring a lot of goals and giving assists. He’s always supporting the teammates and I’m really happy with him.

“For me, at the moment, he’s been the best player.”

It’s rather refreshing to see Monreal name Lacazette as the star man given that most may have gone for the safe option in Mesut Ozil – who’s by the far the most popular among the fans.

The 27-year-old has found his feet at the club following a turbulent opening season and we’ve witnessed his full array of qualities in front of goal.

Given his age, experience and position, Lacazette is now entering his prime.
