Olivier Giroud wins the illustrious award…

Olivier Giroud has been crowned the FIFA Puskas 2017 winner for his strike against Crystal Palace last season and the Frenchman became rather emotional when accepting his award.

Giroud was initially nominated alongside 10 other candidates and subsequently made it into the final round after an online poll, leaving him as one of the last three men standing.

The 30-year-old was finally handed the crown at the FIFA Football Awards in a room full of iconic figures for what was a sensational strike.

Giroud was the third Arsenal player nominated for the award since its inception in 2009, with Samir Nasri and Emmanuel Adebayor both failing to lift the award on previous occasions.

“It’s an honour for me,” an emotional Giroud said to the glamorous crowd.

“I’m delighted to receive this trophy today in front of legends of football. Now I’d just like to thank the people who voted for me. I would like to congratulate the 10 nominees who scored amazing goals too.

“Obviously I would like to thank my team-mates, without them I couldn’t score maybe this goal and my family.”

With all due respect to the other nominees, Giroud was the rightful winner with his scorpion kick capping off such a sensational a sensational move.

It began inside our own half and in a matter of seconds, the former Montpellier man was hooking a poor ball from Alexis Sanchez into the back of the net with his heel.

Giroud has experienced a frustrating start to the season, with his appearances in the starting XI exclusively coming in the cup games.

Alexandre Lacazette is clearly the first choice option in the forward position, though Giroud can still play a big part in getting us far in the cup competitions this season.
