Olivier Giroud coy on his future…
Olivier Giroud has refused to commit his long-term future to Arsenal after previously stating that a departure was a possibility this summer.
Giroud’s position in the team was thrown into doubt following the arrival of Alexandre Lacazette, a player who’s currently competing with him for a position in the French national side.
Giroud experienced his first season as a backup option last season with Arsene Wenger favouring the likes of Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez as options through the middle.
Upon Lacazette’s arrival, Giroud did admit that a move away was an option this summer, although talk of an exit has cooled since he jetted off with the squad on tour.
Following our victory against Western Sydney Wanderers, Giroud stated that his situation remains the same.
“I’m still an Arsenal player for the moment and I want to prepare well for the new season,” Giroud told reporters in the mixed zone.
Giroud also praised Lacazette whom he started alongside, with the two revitalising their partnership from a few training sessions together in the French camp.
Turning 31 in September, the club may view this summer as the final opportunity to cash in on a valuable asset in Giroud, who still has two years left on his contract.
Also, it seems a move will be determined by how confident Giroud is in dislodging Lacazette in the Arsenal side and proving to Didier Deschamp that he’s still the man to lead France.
