Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has made the bold claim that we would’ve won the league by now if Jose Mourinho was our manager.
We’re currently on one of our longest droughts without winning the league and Merson believes that our lack of defensive security over the past decade under Arsene Wenger has contributed.
While defending Mourinho’s credibility as the Portuguese coach comes under attack for his conservative style at Manchester United, Merson feels Arsenal could do with his pragmatism.
As we prepare to face a frightening Man City side, our former midfield star decided to highlight Arsene Wenger’s deficiencies as a defensive coach.
“When United appointed Mourinho, they employed him for what he is doing now,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“They didn’t call him in to play the Sir Alex Ferguson way and win 4-0 and 5-0. He will come in and do it his way.
“If he was at Arsenal, they would win the league.
“He sets them up hard to beat and they go from there.”
It may be Mourinho this time, but this isn’t the first time Merson claimed that another manager could’ve done better with our current squad.
His last outrageous claim was that Harry Redknapp’s tactical nous surpassed that of Wenger’s and that he could’ve won the league for us.
