Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has claimed that he’s starting to feel sorry for Arsene Wenger after describing him as a “lost man” following our Bayern Munich humiliation.

We headed to the Allianz Arena looking to stay in the tie ahead of the second leg and learn from previous errors, but we failed in epic proportions.

Having finished top of our group, we had the luxury of playing the second tie at home, a handicap which has crippled us in the past.

However, just as we did in 2012 at AC Milan, we’ve basically thrown the tie away in the first-leg after a disastrous heavy defeat.

The spotlight is firmly on Arsene Wenger given that he doesn’t seem to be able to get us past the last-16 stage of the Champions League in recent years.

For Merson, he hopes Wenger calls it a day this summer when his contract expires.

“I think it will be time, I think he looked it last night,” Merson said while speaking at a Sutton United event.

“He looked like someone who was a bit lost if I’m being honest and you don’t want to see that.

“The man’s a nice man.”
