Unai Emery expresses his admiration for Nicolas Pepe as talk of an imminent move swirl…

Unai Emery expressed his admiration for Nicolas Pepe following our defeat to Lyon in the Emirates Cup amid talk that the Ivorian is set to join the club shortly.

Reports suggest that a fee has been agreed between Arsenal and Lille and it’s just a matter of agreeing personal terms and passing a medical before the 24-year-old becomes a Gooner.

The fee is said to reach £72million, which shatters our previous transfer record of £56m for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. It also had many scratching their heads given that our entire budget was rumoured to be ‘£40m’.

Emery confirmed that the club is working on a number of targets and refused to confirm or deny that the arrival of Pepe is imminent.

The Spaniard has remained consistent in his belief that we’re in need of a winger and it’s exciting to see that Emery sees the same flaws in the team as most of the fans do.

“We are working, the club, and also thinking about how we can improve,” Emery said after the game to reporters (via HaytersTV).

“There are different players on the table with the possibility that we can achieve their signature.

“Pepe is a very good player and also we are thinking only of players who can really, really improve this squad and also give us some different conditions to improve.

“The same, we are working for the last few weeks and before starting the season in the first match in Newcastle, our aim is to get the best team with the best players in our squad.”

The decision to close the transfer window just before the first game of the season looks like a good decision in hindsight as it doesn’t allow room for postering after a few games.

Emery and the club must pull the trigger on their targets because come kick-off at St James’s Park on August 11th, there will be no second chances.
