Per Mertesacker delighted to see Ozil back on form…

Arsenal skipper Per Mertesacker lauded Mesut Ozil’s display in our 5-2 win at Everton after the German wizard marked his return to the starting XI in style.

Ozil, as he’s probably used to by now, came under intense criticism for the part he played in our defeat at Watford last week, in which he missed a gilt-edged opportunity to put the game to bed before they equalised.

The 29-year-old also shirked out of a challenge in the build-up to Tom Cleverley’s injury-time winner, and many were quick to point the finger at him.

Wenger put him out of the firing line in midweek, and it seems Ozil has come back with a point to prove, scoring one and laying another on a plate for Alexandre Lacazette.

“We started really well, but to go 1-0 down was difficult,” Mertesacker told Sky Sports.

“But we stuck to the game plan and created a lot of chances. We spoke at half-time that we needed to execute them better and our guys up top did it, and that was crucial. The way Mesut played, created chances and got the goal was crucial.

“We created chances from the start, we just lacked execution. We knew that they were under pressure and we took advantage.”

It’s hard to ignore Ozil’s contract situation when analysing his performances and after Wenger claimed that selling him in January is a “possibility”, his commitment will continuously be questioned.
