Mertesacker elated to see Jack Wilshere back…
Per Mertesacker hailed Jack Wilshere after his comeback to the Arsenal first-team in the Carabao Cup against Doncaster Rovers.
Wilshere, who’s recently recovered from a fractured fibula, started his first game in red and white since May 2016.
The 25-year-old produced a performance we’ve become accustomed to down the years and was one of a few players who may have given Wenger some food for thought in terms of his first-team selection.
Wilshere almost set-up Olivier Giroud for a wonder strike with a delightful chip and was also kept off the scoresheet by an impressive save following a long-range effort.
“It was very good to have him back,” Mertesacker told Arsenal Player.
“You can see that he’s getting more comfortable with his position now. He’s brave now and he trusts his body. That’s the most important thing, that he’s capable of playing 90 minutes.
“He will just grow with that and he was vocal as well, which was important for us, especially at the end.
“He kept the ball well in tight situations and to come out of that is vintage Jack. That’s what we want to see from him in the future here at Arsenal.
Wilshere was deployed in his best position by Wenger against Doncaster, sitting deep and collecting the ball from the defence in order to dictate play.
Unlike almost all our other central midfield options, Wilshere does possess the ability to relieve pressure while in possession, something we’ve lacked since Cazorla’s lay-off.
Can Wilshere save his Arsenal career?
