Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks set to end speculation surrounding his future and put pen-to-paper on a new three-year deal, The Telegraph reports.
Aubameyang has one year remaining on his current contract and with the club keen to avoid past scenarios whereby our star players have walked away on a free transfer, this summer was always crucial in deciding the 31-year-old’s future.
After netting 29 times in all competitions, including a brace in the final, the Gabonese international’s signature was the one Arsenal fans wanted above all during this window.
Head coach Mikel Arteta has been bullish on his thoughts about Aubameyang’s future and openly stated that he believed the former Dortmund would extend his stay this summer.
With the report claiming that the free signing of Willian from Chelsea is imminent, it’s clear that Arteta sees Aubameyang’s future through the middle and wants to build the team around him.
Also, given that we’re not set for a fourth season without Champions League football, the club does need to raise finances through player sales.
The likes of Rob Holding, Sokratis, Mustafi and Lucas Torreira and reportedly up for sale, while the club also hopes to move Mesut Ozil and Matteo Guendouzi on.
In all honesty, there seems to be only a handful of players the club won’t entertain offers for with all other options on the table. Gone are the days when our squad was filled with indispensable players and it reflects with our decline in status as a top-four club.
If we have to sell some players for a rebuild, I’m all for it.
