Raphael Honigstein on the Alexis Sanchez saga…
German football expert Raphael Honigstein reports that Bayern Munich are confident they can land Arsenal superstar Alexis Sanchez this summer.
The Chilean is out of contract next summer and despite Wenger insisting that the forward will not be sold, Honistein feels we’ll eventually let him go.
Bayern sees Wenger’s recent comments as a negotiation tactic and given that we’ve never let a player of such value run their contract down, striking a deal for Alexis seems inevitable for the German giants.
However, the Bundesliga champions have baulked at the eye-watering figures involved in the Alexis deal with only 12 months left on his deal, Honigstein reports.
“There’s a big chance (of Alexis joining Bayern),” Honigstein told ESPN.
“Bayern are very optimistic, they feel that they’re in a position to sign him and that they can offer him what he needs.
“Bayern know that, historically, Arsenal never let players run down their contract so they will probably sell.”
Honigstein listed the two sticking points in the deal; one being Alexis Sanchez massive wages while we’re also demanding a huge fee for a player nearing the end of his deal.
While many view Wenger’s stance as a negotiation ploy, I tend to take his words literally at this stage of his career.
We can’t forget that the boss was under huge pressure to walk this summer, and declining to do so means he still feels he can deliver the Premier League.
With the clock winding down on his career, it’s not really in Wenger’s interest to sell his best players knowing he doesn’t have time for another rebuilding job.
