European football expert Raphael Honigstein claimed that Unai Emery’s decisions regarding Mesut Ozil are purely football related and hasn’t got anything to do with a potential personal rift between the two, he said on Sky Sports’ Sunday Supplement..

Ozil wasn’t included in the squad which travelled to Anfield and faced a beating on Saturday, with Unai Emery claiming that the German was suffering with a knee injury.

However, given his absence from the team which faced Spurs and Manchester United this month, Ozil’s involvement was guaranteed had he declared himself fit.

Emery, for the first time, refused to cover-up the German’s absence with a mysterious injury and instead admitted that “tactical reasons” were behind Ozil’s removal from the squad in the Carabao Cup against Spurs.

He returned to the team for the home win against struggling Burnley and looked outstanding, which saw him start at Brighton on Boxing Day.

It was his first start in a Premier League away game since the 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace back in October.

It didn’t last long too, Emery hooked Ozil off at half-time despite the scores being level which indicated that he wasn’t happy with the 30-year-old.

“The last time I spoke to someone who should know, they insisted it was nothing personal,” Honigstein said about the situation.

“Whenever he has not been played, it is because the manager did not fancy him for whatever game.

“Even in the club, there’s an acceptance that you need Mesut Ozil to beat those 20 smaller teams to get the 60 points to build the platform.

“But when it comes to the bigger games, against the more attacking teams, it’s very problematic playing with him.

“Especially when you want Aaron Ramsey in your team.”

It will be interesting to see how long Emery can alienate the most lucrative player in our squad, especially if Ozil makes public comments about his disillusionment.
