Arsenal continue to be linked with Ivan Toney…
Arsenal are reportedly contemplating a move for Brentford striker Ivan Toney ahead of the January transfer window with the striker also eyeing a transfer to north London, the Daily Mail reports.
Toney is currently serving an eight-month suspension for betting-related offences but will be available to resume his career in January – with just 18 months remaining on his deal when the window opens.
According to Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel, both the club and player are ‘coveting’ each other with Arteta’s recruitment team eyeing the goalscorer department as one that needs addressing.
The 27-year-old hasn’t been shy in expressing his admiration and openly admitted that Arsenal was a team he could see himself playing for as he plans his future.
“I’ve been a Liverpool fan my whole life… but from young, I’ve liked Arsenal.
“I’ve liked watching Arsenal and how they play and how passionate their fans are,” he was quoted as saying on the Diary of a CEO podcast in August.
The centre-forward position is one many onlookers believe is the missing piece to the jigsaw Mikel Arteta is building as we look to end our Premier League drought.
While Arteta did invest heavily to bring in Gabriel Jesus just over a year ago, the Brazilian cannot be relied upon to be the team’s main marksman.
Our offensive numbers need to improve drastically, especially for a team that spends the majority of the game in the opposition’s half.
Toney can score goals, but it will be interesting to see if Arteta is keen on him given that he lacks the explosiveness needed to carry the ball or create chances for himself.
