Arsenal have made their move for Gyokeres…
Arsenal have reportedly begun talks to sign Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres as Mikel Arteta looks to finally solve his centre-forward problem, Rising Stars reports.
The rumour mill has been ablaze since David Ornstein reported that our interest in Gyokeres is growing and that the 26-year-old is climbing towards the top of the club’s wishlist.
The former Coventry City striker has been linked with a host of top European clubs over the past 18 months, though we were never one of them, with the focus seemingly on RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.
However, following the arrival of Andrea Berta as sporting director, it seems some of the plans have been tweaked, and the former Atletico Madrid man has yielded significant power.
If there’s anyone who knows how to sign a striker that propels you to winning a title, it’s the Italian chief.
According to the report, Arsenal have been granted permission to discuss terms with Gyokeres’ representatives by Sporting, safe in the knowledge that they have a ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ with the Swede regarding the fee he can leave for.
This means interested clubs would need to secure the player’s commitment before taking any significant step, and it seems Berta is on the task.
The striker market at the moment resembles a large poker table – there are bets everywhere. Apart from Alexander Isak, who doesn’t feel attainable, any move for a centre-forward will come with an element of risk.
With Gyokeres, his goal record speaks for itself, though it remains to be seen if he can replicate that form in the Premier League – few from the Portuguese league have.
One factor in the 26-year-old’s favour is that he’s already played in England, and scored plenty of goals for Coventry in the Championship.
Of all the gambles in the market this summer, taking a punt on Gyokeres would be an educated one.
