Arsenal are reportedly looking to facilitate a return to Borussia Monchengladbach for Granit Xhaka in January, though they’re hoping to include Denis Zakaria in a swap-deal, the Mirror reports.

Zakaria has been one of the Monchengladbach’s rising stars this season with the German club currently leading the way in the Bundesliga.

The 22-year-old certainly displays the qualities we’ve lacked for a while and is more of a combative midfielder than Xhaka, though his passing range isn’t to be underestimated.

Xhaka hasn’t played for the club since his outburst last month when he told fans to “f*** off” after being substituted against Crystal Palace.

The Swiss international was also stripped of his captaincy, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang assuming the role of club captain.

Rumours have been rife that Unai Emery’s decision to strip Xhaka wasn’t necessarily popular in the dressing room and it seems that the Spaniard is willing to go further.

It’s difficult to see a way for Xhaka to get back in the team and despite the injury to Dani Ceballos, he was excluded from the squad once again at Leicester City.

One would’ve imagined that a game away from the Emirates Stadium would be an ideal scenario in which to reintroduce the 27-year-old, yet Emery has rejected the chance to do that on more than one occasion.

A January exit seems likely and if we’re to do sanction that, we’re going to need a replacement – Denis Zakaria fits the bill.
