Zubimendi was reportedly heading to north London…

Real Madrid are reportedly aiming to steal a march on Arsenal and swoop for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi who was thought to be north London-bound, COPE reports.

Zubimendi has a €60 million release clause in his contract, which has made him an attractive proposition to many top clubs across Europe, but the 26-year-old has so far been reluctant to leave his boyhood club.

Liverpool failed to convince the Spanish international to leave last summer with Zubimendi deciding to stay in San Sebastian.

However, in January, a report from the reliable Sami Mokbel revealed that a deal to take Zubimendi to Arsenal was ‘virtually completed’ for the summer with the club set to trigger his release clause after securing the player’s commitment.

Arsenal fans reacted indifferently to the news, given our need for forwards and the presence of Declan Rice in our squad as a holding midfielder.

Also, while Mokbel is a respected journalist, no deal is done until it’s signed and announced. That theory is fuelled by the fact that we’re now learning of a potential hijack from Real Madrid.

COPE report that while triggering Zubimendi’s release clause isn’t an issue for the club, Real Madrid have signalled their intentions to the player and are awaiting his final decision.

I guess we’re about to realise the strength of the groundwork done by Arsenal’s hierarchy and whether or not Zubimendi’s set for another change of mind.
