Rio Ferdinand lambasts Wenger’s decision to stick with Ospina…
BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand seemed bewildered by Arsene Wenger’s decision to stick to David Ospina in the Champions League ahead of our tie against Bayern Munich.
Ospina has been our goalkeeper in this competition this season, and he put in some impressive performances as we topped our group ahead of Paris Saint-Germain.
However, given that there’s been a two-month break in Europe’s premier club competition, Petr Cech is the goalkeeper who’s currently match-fit.
For Ferdinand, the choice should be simple, Cech is the superior goalkeeper and therefore should get the nod in every big game – that’s if winning the competition is your aim.
While Ferdinand’s sentiments are understandable, Cech hasn’t necessarily felt convincing this campaign and his Colombian counterpart deserves a chance after saving us on a few occasions during the group stages.
“I don’t get this. Cech’s your best goalkeeper. Do you want to win the competition or not?” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.
“Play your best goalkeeper. When the keeper changes it throws things out – no matter who he is.
“You’re used to playing with your number one goalkeeper, which is Cech every week. The centre-halves immediately will be thinking “there’s something different behind me” and it creates uncertainty.”
