Arsenal in talks to bring in Roberto Olabe…
Arsenal are reportedly in “advanced talks” in their bid to find Edu’s replacement with Real Sociedad chief Roberto Olabe the man in the frame, Gianluca Di Marzio reports (via mybettingsites).
It was confirmed earlier this month that Olable would leave his post at Sociedad in June after a very successful period in San Sebastian.
The former Sociedad coach gained a reputation for his recruitment and development record with the likes of Alexander Isak, Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi enjoying fruitful spells at the club.
Edu announced his resignation earlier this month and while his former assistant Jason Ayto is currently assuming those responsibilities on an interim basis, the club is still looking for a new sporting director.
Olabe leaving on his own accord will allow the club to approach him without any red tape, with the view that the Spaniard will start immediately and not be forced to endure a gardening leave period.
While in his current role, Olabe has dealt with Arsenal on several occasions including last summer as we prized Merino away from the Reale Arena.
The likes of Kieran Tierney and Nacho Monreal have also swapped shirts between clubs during the 57-year-old’s tenure.
His relationship with Arteta is also key and given that he signed the Gunners manager as a player in 2004, one suspects that they’ll have a smooth working relationship.
It will be interesting to see this story develop in the coming months.
