Serie A duo Torino and Fiorentina are battling out for the signature of Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira with the 24-year-old set to return to Italy this summer, The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano reports.

Torreira has struggled to settle in England since his arrival from Sampdoria in 2018 and despite starting off his Gunners career in stunning fashion, his presence has waned.

There were strong reports linking the Uruguyan international with a move last summer though nothing materialised, the situation seems different this time.

We’re in need of finances to strengthen the squad further, while the squad is also too hefty in terms of sheer numbers. 34 senior first-team members are at the club at the moment, far too many considering only 25 of those can feature in a league season.

Given the current financial climate across the world, clubs in Italy aren’t keen to offer large sums of money upfront for new signings, which means any deal involving Torreira would need to be creative.

According to The Times, Fiorentina are offering an initial loan deal of £7.1million with an obligation to buy for £14.2m.

Whilst it would be sad to see Torreria depart, it is a move which benefits all parties and hopefully goes some way to helping Mikel Arteta obtain his main targets.
