Arsene Wenger calm on potential boycott of Sunderland game by the fans…
Arsene Wenger gave a bizarre response when he was made aware of a potential boycott of the Sunderland game by the fans in a protest against the club.
There are reports that Stan Kroenke will be at the game due to a final boardroom meeting set to take place this month in which Wenger’s future will be decided.
It has led fans to voice their discontent in the only way they feel Kroenke understands: hurt his pockets by staying away.
When asked about that, Wenger seemed to allude to the fact that empty seats are not a major concern as long as tickets are selling.
“We are always sold out so I don’t know where you get that impression,” Wenger asked James Olley from the Evening Standard after he mentioned the empty seats we’ve seen in recent months.
When he was pressed further on the very visible, tens of thousands of empty seats, Wenger replied: “Yeah, but that doesn’t mean we are not sold out.”
It’s quite astonishing. While many continue to aim both barrels at Stan Kroenke, here we have a manager who shares every bit of his philosophy.
Empty stadiums isn’t a good look for any top European club and it usually translates to a level of apathy from the fanbase.
Those with season tickets are automatically included in the overall attendance figure, yet it’s clear to see that a number of them aren’t bothered to show up.
Having said that, there seems to be a financial metric Wenger and Kroenke feel consoled by and one which may see this protest fail.
