Former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott has urged the club to revamp their forward line this summer and has named a Premier League trio as his ideal signings, DR Sports reports.

Our forward department has been neglected by Mikel Arteta and Edu in their recruitment plans in the past five years, spending a transfer fee on just two bonafide forwards in that time.

Much of the investment has gone towards the defensive third of the pitch and while that has worked out well given our formidable rearguard, we’ve come up short of winning the biggest trophies due to our profligacy.

The club have danced around the issue but has now been backed into a corner by circumstances and it seems this summer will be the one where heavy investment goes into the forward line.

For Walcott, he wants a player for all three positions and has picked out Premier League-ready players that we should target.

“Arsenal don’t need three players, they only need one player I’d say,” Walcott said when asked to name three players Arteta should sign this summer.

“(Alexander) Isak is the one that everyone wants, but if you’re gonna hold a gun to my head and say I need to pick two more – I’d probably look at getting some like (Bryan) Mbuemo at Brentford.

“A bit of cover for Saka at times, putting him under a bit of pressure – it’s always important as a player to have that.

“I would probably test the waters with another forward on the left wing because I think it’s all about goals.

“I’d even look at someone like (Callum) Hudson-Odoi.”

With all due respect to Walcott, we can breathe a sigh that he doesn’t have the club’s purse strings.

While the Isak deal is rightly deemed as the most ideal, we don’t live in an ideal world and must put the fantasy of prising the best striker in the Premier League away from the richest club behind us.

As for the other suggestions, a wide player should be top of our shopping list – but adding a player who’ll only play when Saka is absent doesn’t make sense for anyone.

Strengthening our squad should be done by improving the starting XI and any player no longer able to hold their position will become a good option from the bench.
