Micah Richards is baffled by the anti-Arsenal uproar after the north London derby was postponed…
Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards expressed his bemusement regarding the anti-Arsenal uproar across English football after the Gunners’ request to have the north London derby postponed was accepted, Sky Sports reports.
The Premier League confirmed on Saturday afternoon that, per their rules, the north London derby scheduled for Sunday was postponed following our request.
Mikel Arteta hinted that a postponement was possible after an already thin squad was further decimated following our goalless draw at Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.
Cedric Soares left the field with a hip injury sustained in the opening minute of the game, while Granit Xhaka was sent off after 25 minutes and is currently serving a two-match ban.
We later learned that Bukayo Saka, Kieran Tierney and Callum Chambers also picked up knocks and wouldn’t have been available for the game.
This lengthy injury list, coupled with the players away at AFCON, meant that the club was well within their rights to request a postponement.
22 Premier League games were postponed before our request, none of which were engineered by us. However, this particular postponement sent English football into a bizarre frenzy.
“I just feel like when it’s Arsenal, everyone wants to lump in for some reason,” Richards said.
“Arsenal have been in great form and by the rules they’ve done nothing wrong.
“Like the lads have said here, the clarity and they’re playing by what they perceive they don’t have enough first-team players. And let’s be honest, other clubs would do the same thing as well. This is not an Arsenal thing.
“People say the way they’ve handled it, they could have been better. Yes, of course, I think in terms of the integrity of the game. But if you know that you’ve not got senior players fit.
“Every team in the Premier League would look after themselves and if they say they wouldn’t then they’re lying.”
