Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry revealed he wasn’t sure if would’ve joined us in 1999 had it not been for the involvement of former vice-chairman David Dein.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ daily show, Henry was asked about Dein’s previous role at the club and why fans feel we’ve never recovered from his abrupt departure.
Dein, who was responsible for bringing Arsene Wenger to the club and is still extremely close with the boss, garnered respect in the football world with his astute business and extreme knowledge.
He was also a member of the FA board during his time with us, before his untimely departure following a boardroom row about the club’s ownership.
Henry certainly knows the essential role he played at the club.
“Mr Dein was more than vital to what happened at Arsenal Football Club,” Henry firmly stated.
“He was the guy who could comfort and help Arsene Wenger. If isn’t wasn’t for him, I don’t know if that (Wenger’s success) would’ve happened at Arsenal Football Club.
“He was an Arsenal fan, first and foremost.”
Asked if we would’ve signed for us in 1999 if Dein wasn’t there, Henry replied: “I actually don’t know, in all fairness.”
The fact that he couldn’t answer that with such certainty considering his deep relationship with Wenger proves that Dein’s influence was very strong at the club.
He’s the only man Wenger owes his Arsenal career to and the one who the boss trusted most to conduct business without his own personal involvement.
