Thierry Henry talks down on Arsenal again…

Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry launched a random dig at his former club during his punditry gig with CBS Sports after the network ran a poll for its viewers.

During its coverage of the Champions League on Wednesday, the network ran a poll for viewers to vote for their favourite on-air talent.

Henry, Kate Abdo, Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards were the candidates and the results were revealed at the end of the broadcast.

Henry was voted the second-favourite pundit by the viewers with Richards taking top spot – to his delight. Upon hearing the news, the Frenchman launched an unprompted dig at the club he claims he loves.

“I’m just like Arsenal, second place every time,” said the self-deprecating former Gunners skipper.

Henry would know a lot about finishing second, it was the most common league standing during his time at the club – finishing runners-up four times.

While many focus on Henry’s relationship with Mikel Arteta and his role in Daniel Ek’s attempted takeover of the club in 2021, he has never spoken glowingly about the club since becoming a full-time pundit.

Henry was given a monster contract by Sky worth a reported £24 million in 2015 and despite the presence of his mentor Arsene Wenger at the club, he was hyper-critical whenever asked about his opinion.

So much so that Wenger eventually bit back in 2018 after Henry speculated that there were issues in the Gunners camp between Alexis Sanchez and the rest of the players.

“There are people who are paid to talk, it’s difficult sometimes when you are paid to talk, to talk, to talk and only say things that are true and intelligent,” (via Goal.com).

Essentially, Henry is a people pleaser and one who wants to maintain his ‘cool’ aura. Associating himself with Arsenal while we’re not winning isn’t cool and it’s more beneficial for him to join in with the jokes to please his co-workers.

All this comes off the back of an unfortunate 1-0 defeat at the San Siro against Inter Milan in a game Arteta’s men controlled and should’ve won.

When it comes to Arsenal and its history with this competition, there can be no gloating or tough talk from Henry…
