Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has confirmed that Bernd Leno will be handed his first start since joining the club after playing second fiddle to Petr Cech in recent weeks, The Guardian reports.

Leno has been No.2 to Cech since his arrival in the summer which shocked many given that we paid – at the time – the third-highest transfer fee for a goalkeeper in England.

Also, his strengths seem to marry with Emery’s philosophy given that he was comfortable in possession and is very quick off his line to sweep behind our high defensive line.

However, Leno will get the chance to prove his worth in the Europa League in a competition Emery has made clear is very important to our season.

“Bernd Leno is going to play tomorrow,” the head coach told reporters ahead of the clash.

“We are going to play Leno but each match we are going to look at each performance and each preparation.

“I think Petr [Cech]’s performance is good and with Leno we signed him for now and to improve with us. We want him to go a long way here at Arsenal – he is young.”

Just like Lucas Torreira’s start to his Gunners career, it seems Emery is keen for new players to fight for their place and not necessarily walk in to take someone’s role.

Cech has been in-form for us this season, minus his mishaps in possession, and without him, we’d certainly have a less favourable points tally in the league.
