Unai Emery confirms Petr Cech will start against former club…
Unai Emery confirmed that Petr Cech will keep his place between the sticks against his former club Chelsea on Saturday despite calls for Bernd Leno to come in.
Cech made many important stops against Manchester City last week, though Emery’s insistence on playing out from the back has exposed his flaws.
It led many to believe that the 36-year-old cannot play in this system and that maybe our new £20million goalkeeper should be given a shot, one who’s accomplished in possession.
However, despite the qualms about his role in the side, Emery said he has full faith in Cech and he’ll remain in goal for the trip to Stamford Bridge.
“For Saturday, the decision for me is easy,” Emery told reporters ahead of Saturday’s London derby (via ESPN).
“Petr Cech can continue to start the match, I believe in him.
“If [in the future] Bernd starts, I believe in him also. I am very happy with his [Cech’s] performance. He has experience, he has quality, he has the capacity.”
Cech will want to produce a display at his former stomping ground and while he’s certainly improved his general shot-stopping skills from last season, we need him to be comfortable in possession.
Playing against Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea, we’ll see a side built on an intense high press once again and it will be interesting to see how we play through them.
