Unai Emery keen to welcome Mesut Ozil back to pre-season training…
Arsenal boss Unai Emery said the squad will embrace Mesut Ozil as a member of the family after he quit international football amid a racism storm.
Ozil was much maligned by some of the senior figures in the DFB and his Turkish roots were often brought up in a discussion about his performances for Germany.
The 29-year-old decided that he could no longer wear the shirt with pride after he was exploited as a political tool, and it’s garnered widespread coverage.
Ozil has joined up with the squad in Singapore ahead of our pre-season matches against Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
“All of us want to help Mesut feel like it is his home here with us, like a family and it is a family for every player,” Emery told reporters in Singapore (via HaytersTV).
“He feels here with us that he can work every day, and it is good for us that he decided to come here and work with us before our two matches.
“He arrived on Sunday to travel and I prefer to give him the normality in the team and for him to feel good with us,” Emery added when asked about Ozil’s decision to retire from international duty.
You get the sense that everyone at Arsenal is keen to get Ozil focused on his club duties and are quietly glad we won’t have to share him with Germany any longer.
