Unai Emery revealed after our 3-0 win at Blackpool in the FA Cup that the club are working to strengthen two areas in the squad, with the Spaniard hoping for a winger and a central defender, Goal.com reports.

The January window opened at the beginning of the month and while Emery and a few club executives denounced the importance of the winter market, a couple of serious injuries seem to have changed their minds.

Danny Welbeck and Rob Holding suffered season-ending injuries in recent months, while a fractured metatarsal will keep Henrikh Mkhitaryan out until February.

It’s led to Emery being short on numbers and after he called upon a few youngsters for the trip to Blackpool, the Spaniard is hoping for some adequate reinforcements.

“I  think the club is working for the possibility to take some players who can help us during these next four months,” Emery was quoted as saying.

“Maybe the transfer market can help us with a centre-back, but it is not easy because also [Konstantinos] Mavropanos is coming back after injury. Also a winger, right or left, one player can help us in this position.

“We need players with commitment. We need players who are prepared for when the team needs them and they can step up.”

Emery’s opening statement is the interesting one given that he’s looking for players to aid us for the duration of this campaign – which would indicate loan moves.

We have been heavily linked with a move for Barcelona’s Denis Suarez this week, though the nature of that potential deal isn’t clear yet.

It coincides with the recent report from BBC’s David Ornstein who revealed that the club doesn’t have the budget for a major signing in January.

We made a serious mess of last year’s January window which we’re still feeling the effects of and one hopes that will not be repeated.
