Unai Emery is hoping to sign Barcelona midfielders Denis Suarez and Ivan Perisic before the window slams shut on Friday as the boss looks to add depth to our wide options, the Daily Mail reports.

Emery has made it clear that the club can only sanction loan deals this window and our reluctance to make permanent moves has caused these deals to be rather more difficult.

As expected, team’s are reluctant to hand us players on loan without including an ‘obligation to buy’ clause which has proved to be a stumbling block.

Emery has also admitted that there is a real possibility that we fail to secure any deals in the window and that he’s forced to go what we have.

The head coach has also stated that the need for defenders isn’t as urgent as our need for wide midfielders, which indicates that Emery will return to his favoured 4-3-3 system should he secure the signings he’s after.

“We will sign between zero and two players,” Emery was quoted as saying.

“We are speaking two months ago with this possibility but we know that it’s not easy.

“The club is working with the possibility with different players. I cannot say exactly the players but they are players with the possibility to help us, who can play as a winger, right or left.”

Suarez and Perisic would add some depth to our squad, but neither provide the traditional qualities we identify with for modern wide players.

It remains to be seen if they’re the only realistic options Emery could target this January, or if his definition of a wide player is starkly different to what we’re used to in the Premier League.
