Arsene Wenger bemoans Alexis Sanchez situation…

Arsene Wenger says that we’ve taken a £70million hit on Alexis Sanchez by allowing him to get into the last year of his contract, and thinks it will take such a figure to replace him next summer.

Alexis’ deal to Manchester City fell through at the 11th hour after we failed to find a replacement, and the forward will now likely be forced to stay at the club for another 12 months.

While Wenger has never questioned the Chilean’s commitment had this predicament become a reality, it will deny us some huge finances.

Also, the club will need to find a world class replacement to fill his boots next summer – with Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Per Mertesacker in the same boat.

“You take Sanchez into the final year of your contract, you sacrifice £60m-£70m income and then at the end of the season you will have to buy somebody for that amount of money,” Wenger told beINSPORTS.

“So it has a huge price. So at some stage, you have to make a decision you have to sacrifice one or two [players].”

While the situation isn’t ideal, we literally have nobody to blame but ourselves.

We’ve found ourselves in this position on a number of occasions, while a number of top clubs make big decisions when players reach the final two years of their deal.

Chelsea sold Nemanja Matic for that very reason. Wenger hasn’t inherited this situation, his watched it unfold before him.
