Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey confirmed recent reports that a contract offer was indeed withdrawn by the club just as he was ready to sign, though he isn’t looking to leave the club in January, The Guardian reports.

Ramsey has been locked in negotiations with the club about an extension since the back-end of last season with less than eight months left on his current deal.

It’s a predicament we found ourselves in with Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez 12 months ago, with the later leaving the club in January while the former signed a new, lucrative long-term deal.

In this case, though, it seems the club as no intention of keeping Ramsey despite being in negotiations to reach an agreement for a very long time.

The club’s action in terms of withdrawing the offer has shocked many, not least Ramsey who’s still awaiting news on why that’s happened.

“Everything has been going great with the club – we thought we were in a position where we had agreed a deal but that’s no longer the case,” the former Cardiff man was quoted as saying.

“So I just have to carry on playing my football and do my best for Arsenal this season and I’ll leave the rest with the club.

“Am I disappointed? That’s a decision they have made and things happen in football and you just have to get on with it. That’s all I am concentrating on and giving my best for Arsenal.”

Despite the disappointment, Ramsey is looking to remain at the club for the remainder of the season as he feels he can achieve something special with the club: “Would I stay for the rest of the season? Of course, yeah. “I am contracted to Arsenal and I am going to do my best to try and achieve something special.”

That sounds admirable, but in all fairness, Ramsey knows he must be a free agent if he’s to receive the bumper new contract he initially longed for.
