Arsenal have Douglas Luiz in their radar…

Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a move for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz if Mikel Arteta and Edu decide reinforcements are needed in the middle of the park, the Daily Mail reports.

Thomas Partey has barely featured for us this season and the 30-year-old suffered a setback after the club confirmed that he underwent a procedure on his thigh injury.

Partey’s return date is currently unknown such adds to the severity of the situation and has given the club’s decision-makers cause for concern.

With the club set to challenge on three fronts in the second half of the season, we do look rather light in the middle of the park.

While Declan Rice joined the ranks last summer, we lost Granit Xhaka in an area of the pitch where we were already lacking in numbers last term.

The Kai Havertz experiment in midfield hasn’t worked and while Arteta attempts to shoehorn him in for certain games, he’s not relied upon for the important clashes.

It means that Jorginho and Rice are playing a lot of minutes and are being asked to up their load in the Premier League and Champions League across the next 10 weeks.

Aston Villa’s Luiz is an interesting name given that we had three separate bids rejected for the Brazilian on ‘deadline day’ of the summer transfer window in 2022.

Arteta knows the 25-year-old from their time at Manchester City and he’s blossomed into a solid Premier League player capable of operating at both ends of the pitch.

Luiz had just 12 months left on his deal when The Villains rejected those offers, he’s since signed a new, long-term contract which complicates matters.

It we’re to add to the squad in January while operating on a tight budget, Arteta’s obsession with signing players familiar with the league must be relaxed. There are good midfielders all over the world.
