Martin Keown hoping for an all-British affair…
Arsenal legend Martin Keown is hoping for us to be drawn against Celtic in Monday’s Europea League last-32 draw as the competition really starts to heat up.
Celtic are one of eight teams who’ve now descended from the Champions League, and they’re one of four teams from that batch that we could be drawn against.
Borussia Dortmund, Spartak Moscow and Napoli make up the other teams on that mini-list, and it fair to say that our Europa League credentials will receive a sterner test in the next round.
With our league form more unpredictable than British weather, the Europa League may be our most feasible avenue into next season’s Champions League.
“Napoli are a decent side, Celtic, I would love to see them play, maybe against Arsenal,” Keown said on BT Sport.
“I think just for the credibility of their own Scottish division, they need Celtic to do well. They didn’t do well in the Champions League.”
A two-legged affair against Brendan Rodgers’ men would certainly capture the imagination of the public, although I’m not too sure how big of a test it’d be for us.
Celtic play with a lot of passion and are certainly capable of an upset, but that’s the sort of tie Arsenal fans would expect to see us winning.
