Arsenal legend Ian Wright admitted that he believes Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs side are the real deal after their emphatic win against European champions Real Madrid and also spoke on his “jealousy” of their rise.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Wright was reflecting on watching Spurs brush aside Real Madrid at Wembley to secure their place in the last 16 of the Champions League which reinforced the idea that our arch enemies are heading in the right direction.

While progress off the pitch is there to be ridiculed in terms of their wage structure and readiness to sell players, our second highest goalscorer of all time can’t help but admire Pochettino and how he’s crafted such a competitive team.

As an Arsenal man, Wrighty is losing his composure.

“I’ve always been afraid of the Tottenham emergence, because it’s been coming,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Since Pochettino’s got there it’s been steadily rising and rising and the only thing you feel that is going to hold Tottenham back is ‘will [chairman] Daniel Levy pay the players the kind of money that is going to keep them there?’. That’s all it’s going to come down to.

“This is a great manager with great, young, ambitious players. They’re not fly by night players, they look like they’re the real deal. Tonight’s result against Real Madrid, they hammered them. And it’s a team that’s still got a lot more to give.

“It’s something as an Arsenal man, sitting here, it’s a frightening prospect seeing their progression, it really is. And jealousy does come into it,” Wrighty concluded.

It does feel like we’ve swapped places with that mob down the road in recent years, which was compounded this week. While we were involved in a bore draw against Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League, Spurs were on a high from a magical night in the Champions League.

It does provide food for thought…
