Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes head coach Unai Emery has restored the unity at the club between the players and fans after our 5-1 win at Fulham, he said on BT Sport.
Our final season under Arsene Wenger was a tumultuous one, with fans constantly calling for his head as we failed to win a single away game in 2018 – until the final fixture of the season.
That feeling translated onto the pitch and the players looked as though their mind was elsewhere with a growing feeling that an era was coming to an end.
Despite having a year left on his deal, Wenger announced his departure and was replaced by Emery last summer, and one gets the feeling the Spaniard knew he had a task on his hand to unite the club.
He often made reference of playing with intensity to get the fans back on-side, and Keown now believes we’re starting to see the fruits of that.
“At the end of last season it wasn’t quite right,” the Invincible defender said after the game.
“Whether that was the atmosphere that they wanted Arsene Wenger out, the fans, it was quite hostile playing in front of that.
“Now it’s a togetherness, a unity for the fans, the players and the new manager and it’s going nicely.
“People are going to say it’s an overreaction because they’ve beaten Fulham but they couldn’t do that against the likes of Fulham last year.”
