Arsenal have confirmed that forward Danny Welbeck suffered an ‘important’ injury to his left ankle against Sporting Lisbon and he remains in hospital receiving treatment.

Welbeck’s injury was visibly serious given his reaction and those around him, with the likes of Matteo Guendouzi and Aaron Ramsey in complete shock.

The Arsenal family also came together to wish Welbeck the best on social media, from the current crop of players to legends of the past.

It certainly indicated that the players are aware of the seriousness, though the club stopped short of name a timeframe for which he’ll be out for.

Welbeck is also one of a few players who’s out of contract come June and given that this injury will likely keep him out for the remainder of the campaign, it will be interesting to see if the club want him to stay.

It was widely reported that the 27-year-old was available for a transfer last summer, though he’s been heavily used by Emery in all competitions this season.

The forward leaves us short on options out wide, and given that Raul Sanllehi claimed the January was for emergencies only, it will be interesting to see if a change in policy is adopted.

Elsewhere, Stephan Lichsteiner who suffered a hamstring injury in the same game is a doubt for the weekend’s game against Wolves.
