Henrikh Mkhitaryan conducted a Q&A session on Reddit this week and the playmaker was asked to name the best player he’s ever faced.

The 30-year-old has been playing at the elite level of European football for almost a decade now, starting at Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk.

Plying his trade in Ukraine while competing in the Champions League each season, Mkhitaryan played alongside the likes of Willian and Fernandinho.

In 2013, he joined Borussia Dortmund ahead of Liverpool who were extremely interested in the fleeting midfielder, and it was in Germany where he put the rest of Europe on notice.

Mkhitaryan didn’t win much silverware under the tutelage of Jurgen Klopp and then Thomas Tuchel, but he formed a devasting forward-line alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Marco Reus which terrorised a few defences.

Furthermore, the German giants were regularly competing in the latter stages of the Champions League which signifies that Mkhitaryan has come across some talent.

“Lionel Messi,” Mkhitaryan answered when asked who was the best player he’d faced – but the former Manchester United man wasn’t done.

“And also guys like Andrea Pirlo and Xavi.”

While Messi is the obvious answer, Pirlo and Xavi defined a generation in terms of how a midfield general should operate at the top level.

They won six Champions League trophies between them, as well as a World Cup winner’s medal each.
