Arsenal have reportedly opened talks with Barcelona to sign utility man Denis Suarez as we attempt to bring the Spaniard back to English football, The Guardian reports.

Suarez began his professional career at Manchester City and after running his contract down, he joined Spanish giants in 2013.

Due to the quality in their squad, the 24-year-old spent two seasons out on loan to Sevilla and Villarreal respectively, with this spell at the former coming under the tutelage of Unai Emery.

Emery revealed after the game against Fulham that he’s hoping the club can bolster the squad with two new signings in January.

While the Spaniard didn’t specify the areas of the squad he feels needs some strengthening, one hopes he’s eyeing an addition in the forward line.

Suarez has featured mostly as one of Barcelona’s midfield three this season, but he did operate as a wide-man during his stints at Villarreal and Sevilla.

According to the report, the La Liga champions are seeking £20million for his services and one wonders if the club has that type of money in our current budget.

David Ornstein revealed recently that we only have a budget for loan deals in January, which could provide a sticking point.

A player like Suarez can do a job, but that’s not the type of signing that will see us climb up the table. Emery is quick to compare our journey to Liverpool’s so we cannot ignore the Reds’ decisions in the transfer market.

They signed players who were clearly better than what they had and that’s how we need to operate in the upcoming windows.
