Arsenal’s Invincibles squad celebrate 20 years…
Arsenal’s Invincibles squad are in tentative talks to stage a friendly as they celebrate the 20th anniversary of their unprecedented achievement, The Athletic reports.
Next May will mark 20 years since that historic day at Highbury against Leicester City when Arsene Wenger’s men came back from behind to secure a 2-1 win.
Goals from Thierry Henry and, fittingly, skipper Patrick Vieira placed the team at the pinnacle of English football with their achievement ageing gracefully.
After Manchester City won the treble last season, proving that Manchester United’s greatest season can be matched, our ‘gold’ Premier League title stands alone as a unique accomplishment.
The report claims that plans are at an embryonic stage in terms of date and location – though current talks point towards the Emirates Stadium hosting the clash.
Several players from that infamous squad have reportedly already voiced their interest in taking part in the event – though the club doesn’t have to travel far to ask a few of them.
Edu is now the club’s director of football and has been instrumental in turning around our fortunes. The likes of Gilberto, Robert Pires, Lauren and Ray Parlour work for the club in an ambassadorial capacity.
It will be interesting to see, should this friendly game become a reality, who’s chosen as the opposition for the friendly game.
I can only think of one suitable opponent – Man Utd XI with Sir Alex Ferguson in the dugout.
