Arsene Wenger has backed Jack Wilshere’s chances of reclaiming his spot in the England squad ahead of the World Cup after his impressive cameo display at Burnley.
Wilshere was introduced 20 minutes from time for Alex Iwobi and certainly injected some pace in our play with the team suffering in the final third due to Mesut Ozil’s absence.
We eventually grabbed the winner in injury time courtesy of Alexis Sanchez’s last-gasp penalty, though Wenger was asked to touch on Wilshere’s current situation after the game.
“I feel he did alright when he came on because he has a little burst to be dangerous,” the Frenchman told the press.
“I think he’s focused, determined – and that’s what we want from him. We play so many games he’s getting stronger in every game.”
While Wenger’s optimism about Wilshere’s chances is admirable, he can’t continue to endorse the 25-year-old’s England hopes when he’s not picking him for the Premier League team.
Wilshere’s predicament is also enhanced by his contractual situation, with his deal up in less than seven months and no sign of an extension.
After our 1-0 defeat at FC Koln, Wilshere hinted that the lack of playing time was starting to frustrate him and with his England place in jeopardy, he may well seek a move away in January.
