Arsene Wenger named England, France and Brazil as his three favourites to lift the World Cup in Russia though he also claimed this could be the year an underdog wins the tournament.
As the tournament heads into its knockout stage, it’s time for the pretenders to be separated from the contenders and Wenger’s country are already through to the last eight.
A Kylian Mbappe-inspired performance left Lionel Messi and Argentina reeling, and the 1998 world champions were joined by Uruguay who disposed of Portugal.
Croatia and Russia also came through their last-16 ties, with the hosts dispatching of 2010 world champions Spain in a pulsating affair.
For Wenger though, as much as he’d like to see an underdog do well, his heart and mind is leading him to three choices.
“My heart favourite is, of course, France,” Wenger told beIN SPORTS.
“I said many times that no country under 40 million people has won the World Cup since 1954, since after the Second World War.
“But I ask you, can we get out Belgium, who is a smaller country than 40 million? I think they have the quality.
“Can we have a surprise with Croatia? They have the quality.
“But I would say, at the moment, England – nobody speaks about England, but they are dangerous – Brazil or France.”
When pushed by the host on beIN SPORTS to choose one, Wenger’s answer was obvious: “If I choose one, it is France.”
