Arsene Wenger admitted that he was partly to blame for last season’s turbulent campaign after the manager refused to commit his future to the club until after the FA Cup final win against Chelsea.
After crashing out of the Champions League in humiliating fashion against Bayern Munich, we experienced some horrendous form the like of which we’d never seen under Arsene Wenger.
Many thought the results, which eventually cost us a place in the Champions League, would make Wenger’s future untenable, but that was not the case.
The boss has since extended his contract by a further two years, and while speaking at a charity event for the Grenfell Tower victims – created by the Football Writers’ Association – the Frenchman revealed how the players confronted him during the turmoil.
“At some stage, the players came to see me and said: ‘what’s going on, boss?’,” Wenger told the audience.
“I created, with me not deciding, a lack of clarity in the dressing room, and there’s nothing worse than that in the dressing room.
“When you’re not completely in, or the players feel you’re not completely in, it’s difficult to tell them ‘we go’.”
Wenger has repeatedly stated that he’ll one day reveal what happened behind the scenes last season in a period in which the club’s image was dragged through the mud.
We were poor on the pitch, the fans were fighting amongst each other in the stands, and the players were so disillusioned that it looked like they’d given up.
It has created wounds that are still not completely healed, and one hopes we can start the season off strongly to prevent those feelings returning.
