Arsenal have confirmed that Danny Welbeck has undergone a second ‘planned’ operation following the serious ankle injury he suffered against Sporting Lisbon on Thursday.

The 27-year-old saw his right ankle buckled underneath his body as he drove into the box for a header, and it immediately became apparent that something was wrong.

Our players were in utter shock, with Aaron Ramsey one of the ones most affected given his experience in 2009 at Stoke City.

It was confirmed days ago that Welbeck suffered a dislocation and a fracture to his right ankle and with the injury needing two operations, one can imagine the extent of the issue.

The club has refrained from attaching a timeframe to his rehabilitation, though Welbeck’s contractual situation does complicate matters slightly.

Welbeck is out of contract in June; so should he need to use our facilities to recuperate beyond that period, will that be ratified by the club?

Of course, that theory becomes irrelevant if Welbeck extends his contract, which seems unlikely given the lack of talk about potential negotiations.

What does the injury mean in terms of our business in Januar? Raul Sanllehi did admit that the window could be used for emergencies only, and our options in the forward line are wearing thin.

The curious case of Reiss Nelson could also come into play. If he has a recall option in his loan deal, could that be activated?
