Ian Wright took aim at the fans who booed Alex Iwobi off the pitch at Huddersfield…
Arsenal legend Ian Wright launched a passionate defence of Alex Iwobi and slammed the fans who jeered the Nigerian international as he was substituted at Huddersfield.
Speaking via his YouTube channel, a disappointed Wright couldn’t understand why our own fans were attacking a player who’s come through the academy and scored in a game in which we claimed all three points.
Admittedly, the 22-year-old didn’t have the best of games, but his directness and willingness to attack Huddersfield’s defence was admirable.
In a 3-4-3 system favoured by Unai Emery in recent weeks, Iwobi is tasked to collect the ball on the half-turn between the lines and create overloads against the opposition’s full-backs.
He has, for the most part, delivered what has been asked of him, though his end product as he reaches the final third can be rather inconsistent.
As a wide player, you’re likely to lose possession more frequently than other players given that it’s your job to attack the opposition and provoke.
For Wrighty, though, there is no explanation for the abuse Iwobi continues to receive – especially given that he’s an academy graduate.
“What has happened to us, to Arsenal fans now?” Our former record goalscorer said.
“Especially the away fans, the hardcore fans who go away, travelling all other the place, losing patience with a young Londoner, an academy player, trying his very best.
“We need to reset and get behind the boys again, especially people like Alex Iwobi. He needs it more than anybody now. He tries to be progressive when he plays.
“It’s embarrassing and I feel sorry for him.”
