Kevin Campbell calls on Wenger to delve into the market…
Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has called on Arsene Wenger to strengthen the spine of the team after our heavy defeat to Chelsea in Beijing.
While the Blues fielded a very strong lineup against our under strength side, Campbell still feels we lack power through the centre of our side.
Chelsea produced a dominant display without their £142million worth of new talent with the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoué Bakayoko and Alvaro Morata left out.
Alexandre Lacazette was anonymous throughout though Campbell has backed the forward to succeed, before reinforcing the belief that our business shouldn’t be done for the summer.
“I still think Arsenal need to strengthen that spine,” the former Arsenal striker said after watching our tepid display.
“I still think a centre-half is needed, I honestly think that Arsenal should look at the Van Dijk situation.
“You’ve got Lacazette at the top, now you need that dominant centre-mid and a dominant defender.”
The same calls were made last summer, and Shkodran Mustafi and Granit Xhaka were supposed to be those players.
However, Mustafi hasn’t really been convincing, while Xhaka’s talents come to life when he’s in possession of the football, something which many of our midfielders have in common.
Francis Coquelin is our only ball-winner, although he can’t seem to go about his business without doing something silly to catch the referee’s attention.
