Former Arsenal defender Matthew Upson believes that Arsene Wenger may well walk away from Arsenal this summer after analysing the tone of his comments in recent weeks.

Since it became apparent that we’d miss out on a top-four place, Wenger went on the offensive against his detractors and claimed to “never forget” their actions.

It seemed as though it was a thinly veiled attack on the fans who’ve turned on the team, an assumption which was affirmed in his post-match press conference.

Those comments, the nature of which seemed designed to create a further barrier, has led Upson to believe that the FA Cup win has given Wenger the greatest scenario in which to announce his departure.

“My hunch is…the recent comments especially about how upset he’s been with the way he’s been treated and the fact that he’s just won this cup, if he is going to go he can leave the job on such a high note,” Upson predicted.

“He could go out with a bang and if he is going to make that step, it wouldn’t massively surprise me as much as it would’ve done a week ago.”

Wenger has kept us guessing all season as to what his intentions are regarding his future while the press has come up with all sorts of permutations for his potential stay.

We can finally say that his future will be resolved next week and if we’ve learned one thing: never play a game of poker against Wenger.
