Arsene Wenger hailed Alexis Sanchez after the Chilean marked his first start this season with a sensational winner against FC Cologne in the Europa League.

Alexis, who was embroiled in a transfer saga all summer and was close to departing for Manchester City, is under the microscope in terms of how he behaves on the pitch.

Fans are anxious to see if the 28-year-old is still committed to the cause, and we certainly got our answer on Thursday night.

Cutting in on his right foot, Alexis unleashed a curling effort into the top corner to give us a 2-1 lead against the Bundesliga side.

“I think Sanchez is still running after his best form,” Wenger told BT Sport.

“He is a fantastic football player but physically he has just come back.

“But he has it in his locker to do something special, which he did.”

It remains to be seen if Wenger deems Alexis fresh enough to start against Chelsea on Sunday as we look to get our away form in the league back on track.

He certainly made it hard for the boss to leave him out after producing such a show-stopping individual moment.
