Journalist Gabriele Marcotti isn’t convinced by the club’s public stance on Alexis Sanchez with the Chilean out of contract next summer.
Arsene Wenger has remained adamant that Alexis will not be sold this summer, despite entering the final year of his contract and, so far, refusing to extend it.
The 28-year-old was our player of the year last season, netting 30 goals in all competitions, including the opening goal in the FA Cup final.
However, Marcotti questions whether Arsenal can hold out for much longer regarding Alexis’ exit.
“I think you’re seeing some spinning going on,” Marcotti said on ESPN FC.
“We know Paris Saint-Germain are interested because they’ve said. The links to City aren’t going away, we know Pep Guardiola loves Alexis’ ability to go and press high.
“Arsenal continues on insisting: ‘look, we’d rather just keep him and let him go on a free’.
“It’s a World Cup year, maybe Alexis Sanchez’s last World Cup. If he stays at Arsenal and they don’t do great, come January-February and he says ‘I’m a free agent in June, do I start thinking more about the World Cup, than about trying to qualify for the Europa League’,” Marcotti added.
These are all scenarios Wenger and the hierarchy probably already thought of before making their decision, and they’ve clearly banked on the Chilean’s commitment levels remaining the same next season.
