Gary Neville wants Unai Emery to stick to his philosophy and ignore the noise following two defeats…

Gary Neville launched a passionate defence of Unai Emery who’s coming under criticism after we lost our first two opening games with the scope mainly on his style of play.

Emery has instructed the team to build the play from the goalkeeper in the floor, a philosophy which had us in trouble on many occasions against Manchester City.

We were comfortably beaten by the champions, though our showing at Stamford Bridge was more encouraging – at least in terms of the attacking department.

Our defensive display in both games left little to be desired and our naive high-line was constantly exposed.

It has led to claims that not much has changed since Emery took over in terms of our style of play, with many urging him to revert to a more cautious approach.

Neville completely rejected that statement and even addressed Ex-England manager Sam Allardyce who was one of Emery’s more vocal detractors.

“I think it’s ignorant to suggest he has to adapt,” the former Man Utd skipper said on Monday Night Football.

“Unai Emery has come into this football club and he’s had six weeks to work.

“Unai Emery has been a coach for 10 years and been successful. He has his idea. The players have to adapt to him, and he has to find out over this season which players can adapt to him and which players can’t.”

Carragher visibly disagreed but when Neville accepted that things might even get worse before they get better, he called out former managers such as Sam Allardyce for even commenting on the situation given their different levels.

“I saw Sam Allardyce’s comments last week on the radio after the first game where he talked about ‘you can’t do this, you can’t do this!’

“Unai Emery’s not trying to get eight points from five games to avoid relegation. He’s trying to build a side to win a title. He’s trying to build a team with a style to win a title, not lump it long and get in behind it.”
