Granit Xhaka revealed that Unai Emery has made it clear that the Premier League remains a priority for the Arsenal side, despite the chance of adding to his three Europa League titles, BT Sport reports.

As we prepare to face our toughest test yet in this competition, Xhaka revealed that Emery was clear from the off that he wanted a strong Premier League campaign.

The target for this season has always been to get back into the Champions League, and we have two paths available to us to achieve that goal.

Winning the Europa League would guarantee a spot in Europe’s premier club competition, and our odds would be high given Emery’s pedigree in the competition.

However, despite the squad being aware of that, Xhaka says Emery will judge the season on the league and pushing on from our sixth-place finish last term.

“When the coach arrived here at Arsenal he said to us, ‘the most important thing is the Premier League’,” Xhaka revealed.

“We want to be at the top. The Europa League is, of course, important as well, we know the history of the coach that he’s won the Europa League three times and why not a fourth?”

Judging by the squads he’s named in the opening two games and the mere presence of Xhaka at Sporting Lisbon’s stadium shows that Emery is taking this competition seriously.

No English team competing for a full season in the Europa League has finished higher than fifth in the Premier League, Emery is looking to change that inconvenient fact.
